Workshop Descriptions:
1. Blues and Boogie-tuning DAd, All levels. A fun and easy way to become introduced to playing across the strings for melody while getting in the groove with rhythm and syncopation. We will learn the basic Blues shuffle in the Key of E, and Boogie in the Key of D. Shortenin' Bread Boogie will be taught as well.
2. Fundamentals of Melodic Flatpicking-tuning DAd, Beginner and up. We will focus on scales played across the strings rather than up and down one string. This technique adds speed, clarity, and variety to your playing in addition to what you already know. The scales we practice will be utilized in learning a fun and catchy fiddle tune using the Flatpicking technique.
3. Flatpicking Whiskey Before Breakfast-tuning DAd, Intermediate. The next step up from Fundamental, we will learn a great version of this tune, done in two arrangements an octave apart with all the notes a fiddle player would use. It will combine the technique of playing cross string scales with an introduction to playing chord arpeggios as well.
4. Patterned Chord Arpeggios for Melody- tuning DAd, Intermediate and up. Every chord when strummed is also 3 potential melody notes when the strings are played one at a time. Adding picking patterns to that idea, we will learn to pull those notes out of the chords to play a tune buy working through a lovely waltz "Seeker's Waltz". It's like fingerpicking with a flatpick using a technique called crosspicking.

If you think you'd like to try the bowed dulcimer and don't have one, there are two simple alternatives. We will have a few extra instruments for folks to use who want to try it. There is also a very simple and inexpensive alteration that you can do to an existing mountain dulcimer to make bowing possible. Let Ken know if any of you need any of these details.

Hosted by a non-profit association that benefits the Kids Uke Club Program in San Antonio. The program provides ukuleles, cases, electronic tuners, and lessons for free for kids 8-12. Our goal is to spread the joy of ukulele to the world (so okay, the universe...)
This year we have a line up of instructors from all over the USA. There'll be affordable and fun workshops on everything from how to play Jazz to Clawstrum to Rock-n-Roll on your uke. Check it out if you'd like -- we'd love to see you there. It's happening the same week as Fiesta, so there's lots to see and do in San Antonio around that time. Definitely a ukulele lover's heaven.
