You Can Teach Yourself Dulcimer

"Madeline MacNeil's performances are characterized by her effortless vocals and impeccable mountain and hammered dulcimer playing. In this book she reveals some of the secrets of her success with the mountain dulcimer. Early on, she reminds the reader that "the dulcimer is not a toy or a stringed kazoo" but a serious, expressive musical instrument capable of "stretching as far as the imagination". She endorses both playing by ear and learning to read standard notation. In easily-understood language she manages to explore some very complex, even esoteric concepts, making this a particularly valuable book for the beginning instrumentalists. You Can Teach Yourself Dulcimer is simply a great fundamental book. Tweleve intensive lessons in 95 pages. Standard notation and tablature. Illustrated with photographs and drawings."

You Can Teach Yourself Hammered Dulcimer

"Every aspect of the hammered dulcimer and its playing techniques is covered in this comprehensive, yet easy-to-understand text. A masterful teacher, Madeline MacNeil exceeds the expectations of a beginner's book, providing a firm foundation for the development of a total musician while maintaining an engaging, informal tone throughout. With detailed discussions on dulcimer layout, hammers, tuning, and stands plus extensive performance notes on every tune, this book is a valuable asset to the beginning through intermediate player. From Oh Suzanna to Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, Madeline shows the novice dulcimer player how to "map your way through" a new piece of music, finding clear, musical directions through what at first must seem like a maze of strings. All tunes are in standard notation. The book's 87 pages are illustrated with photos as well as quaint woodcuts, engravings, and pen and ink drawings."

Shall We Gather

Hymns Arranged for Hammered Dulcimer

"This collection of music conveys Madeline's love of hymns. Many of these arrangements provide a harmony part that may be performed on another instrument such as the flute, guitar, bowed psaltery, or mountain dulcimer. The majority of these tunes can be played on a 12/11-course hammered dulcimer (with G below middle C being the lowest note on the instrument). Selections include: A Mighty Fortress Is Our God; All Beautiful the March of Days; Amazing Grace; Be Thou My Vision; Come, Thou Font of Every Blessing; Evening Hymns; For the Beauty of the Earth; He Leadeth Me; Here I Am, Lord; How Great Thou Art; and many more. Written in standard notation only with complete lyrics and suggested chord changes."

Masters of the Wooden Nickel

CD........$15.00

Masters of the Wooden Nickel

"A celebration of good music and good times." Released in November, 2001.

Friends who performed at the Wooden Nickel in Crockett, TX, got together and made a CD.
The CD has about 71 minutes of music on it. There are some all instrumentals, but there are a lot of tracks with vocals as well. It is a nice mix of songs and styles. All the cuts are straight acoustic recording - NOTHING PLUGS IN BUT THE MICROPHONES ON THIS CD. Many of the artists are accomplished and serious amateur musicians; some are professional. Some are championship winners in various competitions at festivals across the land. Most of these folks get together to jam whenever we can!

LIST OF TUNES:
Bile the Cabbage/June Apple/Old Joe Clark -- Rivers of Texas -- Unclouded Day -- Old Needle Case -- Four Nights Drunk -- Susanna Gal -- Blow Ye the Trumpet -- Dear Little Stranger -- When the Roll is Called Up Yonder -- Dixie -- John Brown's March -- Spotted Pony -- Silver Dagger -- Rock the Cradle Joe -- The Blackest Crow -- Minstrel Boy -- Shepherd's Wife Waltz -- Will the Circle Be Unbroken -- Down the River -- Amazing Grace -- I Bid You Goodnight

Folks on the CD are Jim & Marian Hull, Gary Hamilton, Lloyd & Georgia Shell, June McAdams, Kathy Davis, Ken Ryan, Bill Thurman, Jerry & Margaret Wright, Hollis Wright, Lloyd Wright, Neal & Coleen Walters, Don Pedi, Debbie Porter, Justin & Linda Marquez, Frank Miller and Durelle Kincel.

Linda & Justin recorded Track #8 (with acoustic guitar, silver flute and vocals) as their part of this project. The liner notes pay homage to Kate Campbell, from whose gospel CD "Wandering Strange" they learned it.
