The Dragon Dulcimer

This picture shows the mystical dragon head. Dragons are legendary for their strength, power and fearlessness and this fellow is a great example of all three. The dragon always seeks wisdom. Dragons could make themselves as large as the universe or as small as a silkworm. They could also change color and disappear in a flash. Dragons were rarely seen because they cleverly hid in caves burrowed into the lofty mountains, or coiled up on the bottom of the deepest seas.

The Dragon dulcimer can be made with either an air-dried, hand selected Cherry, Honduras Mahogany, or Pennsylvania Black Walnut body. Either Sitka Spruce or Western Red Cedar can be used for the soundboard with equal beauty in tone and response. Red Cedar has more "character" and grain design. Spruce is a lighter color and the grain is more clear. The dragon head shown above is made of Cherry. The instrument shown below is made with a western red cedar soundboard and a Cherry body.

An internal microphone can be added to electronically amplify the sound of your dragon dulcimer. The Dragon design on the soundhole is hand painted.(Click on pictures for a larger view.)

An internal microphone can be added if you want to electronically amplify the sound of your dragon head dulcimer.

The Dragon design on the soundhole is hand painted and a variety of colors can be used. I repeat a color on the tuning machine knobs to tie it all together. You can choose a color scheme and I will work it in, matching the tones and hues to the colors in the wood that I hand-pick. Below are examples of different color schemes on the dragon soundhole. As you can see, no two painting designs are exactly alike, so you will always have a one-of-a-kind art piece.

Below are additional pictures of other Dragons that moved to Massachusetts. Metallic gold was painted on his wings and tail to make him glisten in the sunlight. I used my last piece of Butternut for the soundboard. Butternut is no longer available due to diseased trees.

I would suggest that you also get the padded, Oval Hardshell case ($99.99 when purchased with your dulcimer) for full protection. Anything less would not protect your investment against damage, scratches, and dings.Dragons could make themselves as large as the universe or as small as a silkworm.
