The Equus Dulcimer

The Equestrian Dulcimer. The Equus dulcimer has an elegant carved equestrian horse peghead that is admired by horse lovers nationwide

The Equus Dulcimer has an elegant and graceful carved horse peghead. It can be made with either an air-dried, hand-selected Cherry, Mahogany or Pennsylvania Black Walnut body. Either Sitka Spruce, or Western Red Cedar can be used for the soundboard with equal beauty in tone and response. Red Cedar has more "character" and grain design. Spruce is a lighter color and the grain is more clear. The musical instrument shown here is made with a Western Red Cedar soundboard and Maple body.

An internal microphone can be added if you want to electronically amplify the sound of your horse head dulcimer. The Equus Dulcimer Soundhole

The design on the soundhole is hand painted and a variety of colors can be used. I repeat the colors on the details of the horse head to tie it all together. There are alternate soundhole designs that you can order. Look at the bottom of this page for some ideas! You can choose a color scheme and I will work it in, matching the tones and hues that are painted on the horse head and soundhole to the colors in the wood that I hand-pick.

This picture shows the detail of the painted sound holes. You can have your choice of color scheme repeated on the carved horse head.

The instrument on the left was made out of Maple as per the customer's request and has a very bright tone. I prefer not to use Maple for that reason, however, that is a personal preference and if you prefer a brighter sounding instrument, then I would suggest Maple for the body wood.

This is a limited edition piece, meaning that I will not make very many of them. You will definitely have a unique piece of art and a truly beautiful sounding custom instrument.

You should also get a padded, Oval Hardshell case for full protection. Anything less would not protect your investment against damage, scratches, and dings.

The Santa Fe Soundhole is a new design which has small petroglyph designs silhouetted within the "Pueblo".  You can choose from ranch and cowboy designs, kokopelli, gecko, coyote, hands, cactus, bear or any other petroglyph design of your choice. The soundhole pictured here has a cow skull, a cactus, a boot and a gecko!
