Mountain Dulcimer Teacher

"My first dulcimer - Penny - found me Christmas. 1999. It was the beginning of a love affair. The more I learned, the more I wanted to know. About 2003 I began teaching others how much fun it is to belong to a dulcimer. I have taught private lessons and - most recently - a continuing education class at a nearby community college. Most of my students have been beginning level. But few of them stay that way. Some of them have come even back to learn how to make their own music. I try to help people find how they want to be used by their dulcimer. Private lessons in my home. My schedule is flexible."

For over 20 years Lois Hornbostel has been known as one of the foremost developers and promoters of mountain dulcimer playing and music. Her mastery of the instrument has resulted in best-selling books for Mel Bay Publications, acclaimed recordings, and dulcimer playing championships including those at the Galax, VA, and Fiddlers Grove, NC old-time fiddlers' conventions.
Lois’s musical versatility comes from having learned her music firsthand from traditional musicians within their cultures - traditional Irish in New York, Cajun music in Louisiana, and old-time string band music in North Carolina. Her first recording, "Vive le Dulcimer," which featured international folk music that she adapted to the dulcimer, was a finalist for an "Indie" Award in the World Music category. Lois’s more recent instrumental recordings, "Dulcimer Enchantment" and "Dulcimer Jubilee," dynamically present the versatile sounds of the mountain dulcimer. She was chosen for a compilation of renowned dulcimer players called "Masters of the Mountain Dulcimer, Volume I."
She has written the following books for the mountain dulcimer: The Irish Dulcimer; Dulcimer Fiddle Tunes, Anthology for the Fretted Dulcimer; Dulcimer Duets, Rounds & Ensembles; The Classroom Dulcimer (Lois's beginner book); American Fiddle Tunes for Mountain Dulcimer; and is completing a new book for Mel Bay Publications entitled Cajun Favorites for Mountain Dulcimer.
Lois is the editor of a new internet dulcimer "webzine" for Mel Bay Publications entitled
"Dulcimer Sessions.".
Lois is known for her imaginative approaches toward teaching the mountain dulcimer and has revolutionized many of the teaching methods. For 12 years Lois was director of the Appalachian State University Dulcimer Playing Workshop in Boone, NC, and she has expanded and continued her innovative dulcimer teaching work with the Western Carolina University Mountain Dulcimer Week in Cullowhee, NC. In elementary schools throughout the Southeast, she is known as "Miss Lois," intrepid children's dulcimer teacher, and has taught over 17,000 youngsters to play the instrument.
